In a chemical facial peel doctors actually create a wound

When a doctor performs a chemical peel, chemicals are applied to the skin to make it blister, producing a "controlled wound." The physician applies the acid solution-glycolic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, trichloroacetic acid (TCA), or carbolic acid-to small areas on the skin. When the treated layer is peeled off, the new, younger-looking skin is usually smoother and less wrinkled than the older skin. Most patients experience a warm to somewhat hot sensation lasting five or ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. Dermatological surgeons select a peeling agent based upon the type of skin damage present.
