Psoriasis Treatment
Coal tar is an accepted and effective therapy for psoriasis
More than 80 years ago, a therapy to combat psoriasis was developed at the Mayo Clinic. While it is bizarre sounding, it is an effective type of therapy still in use today. Known as the Goeckerman therapy, the method employs coal tar in conjunction with UVB light therapy. This treatment requires that the patient spend from early morning to early afternoon covered in the tar while they receive light treatments. The therapy lasts anywhere from two to four weeks and is administered on a daily basis. Although it is a sticky mess, and requires a large chunk of time, the therapy is so safe it can be used in children, elderly people and pregnant women.
