Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis Basics
Multiple sclerosis is a disease where the body actually attacks itself
Normally our immune system works to defend us against foreign substances such as viruses or bacterias that can cause disease. However there are some diseases, called autoimmune diseases, where the immune cells act abnormally and attack parts of itself. In the case of MS, the body is attacking myelin, which is the substance that surrounds and protects nerves. When the myelin is destroyed we get the symptoms that we associate with MS.
