Some bacteria are resistant to traditional antibiotics

If a strain of bacteria becomes resistant to an antibiotic after a genetic mutation, it will survive and reproduce to create more resistant bacteria. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), or staph, for example, is a strain of bacteria that is resistant to the methicillin class of antibiotics. These "superbugs" can be treated with other antibiotics, but must be followed closely to ensure that they are responding to treatment.
