Common painkillers can inhibit a protective enzyme in the stomach
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) inhibit an enzyme that reduces pain and inflammation. But, that enzyme is also found in the stomach, where it works to protect the stomach lining. Improper use can increase the risk of developing stomach and gastrointestinal problems like stomach ulcers and bleeding.
